Wilberforce Trust runs a volunteer befriending service where volunteers spend an hour or two each week with service users engaging in a range of activities from chatting, reading, helping with crafts and writing letters or helping with IT.
Because they become a friend, we ask that volunteers commit to at least one year, though we prefer two years if possible. Many of our befriending volunteers are school or university students and they can usually commit to two years. However, we have many more mature befrienders who have been visiting their ‘friend’ for many years.
The visit may simply be to have a chat and perhaps a cup of tea. It may be to help with something, from writing a letter, reading a book (or even help to write one) to some needlework or other craft work, help with doing something on a computer or going out for a while.
Visits usually last about an hour.
