This week has been World Glaucoma Week. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.

Some Key facts about Glaucoma:
- Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness
- It is often pain free and can damage your eyesight without you knowing
- Glaucoma can run in families – if you have a close relative with the condition you have four times the chance of developing it,
- People aged 40 and over with a close relative with glaucoma are entitled to a free NHS eye examination.
Glaucoma affects more than 500,000 people in England and Wales alone. If you haven’t had an eye test in the last two years, be sure to get them checked.
